GM has been experimenting with electric car conversions in the 1960s. The models Chevette and Corvair were converted into electricity, but never produced.
In 1987 came a Racin in the sun, solar Racing throughout Australia. The GM-sponsored national airline won solar. Followed by GM Impact electric car in 1990. The car has been helped in the design of KT Propulsion techincal experts and Hughes Electronics. The futuristic travel was the forerunner of the EV1. The car was well ahead of the pack with the exception of the Bank of lead-acid batteries.
1994 GM began the program at a glance. The program has 50 custom made for the impact EVs. 14,000 people have asked to be testers. Motor Trend Magazine as the car “fantastic”. A modification of the impact has reached an record183mph world.
In one of those interesting twists of fate, the impact was so well received that it influenced the California Air Resources Board, the now famous and now defunct Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate trade. Increasing the decision quota fixed electric production car large automobile manufacturers to 2% in 1998 to 10% in 2003. Gm first appeared on all the orders, the Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was equipped with electric motors.
Then, Toyota, Honda and Nissan have shown their support by making their own prototype EV. Ford Ranger pickups converted into electricity, and published the Ford TH! NK EV. Electric car conversions blossomed. EVs were indeed on a roll.
The consequences have been developed in the 1996 EV1. This car has a success from the start. Celebrities driving and free advertising opportunities available. We recall the local TV presenter, the EV1, the camera drive and offers a steady stream of positive comments. The production was limited and the EV1 could not be bought and paid for. The car could be rented, but the future looked good for the electric car. 288 of the 1996 version with lead-acid batteries have been leased.
GM was already expressed doubts about the EV to the public. The company achieved the preview program as a failure, but went with EV1 development, with an advertising campaign. The hot-cold-GM stance has not gone unnoticed. Citizens repeatedly shown their support for the EV1, a lot of time and money, which made them to be correct and good.
In 1999, major improvements to the battery and electronics training was provided. move in yet another curious, the number of leases was limited available despite an increase in the demand for leasing. GM does not seem wise to obey laws of supply and demand.
Then, in a reversal gave GM a recall of 450 EV1S. There were technical problems with the batteries. 200 of these vehicles were equipped with new Ni-MH.
In 1999, the EV1 production line after the capture of more than 1,100 cars were stopped. In 2002, remember, the EV1 was started, consumers have responded. There were attempts at negotiation. There were protests. Ultimately, the cars were gone and stored in a warehouse. EV1 program was officially ended in 2003. This is the same year in which the decision was annulled on the CARB, supported by a phalanx of the automotive industry and the oil company masked legal forms.
The story ends with the defeat of almost every single EV1. Efforts were EV1 against breakage numerous and well documented, as in the film “Who Killed the Electric Car” show. Several GM executives have been expressing remorse for this result.
Fast forward to 2010, made GM an additional 180 degree turn. Now the company plans to produce the Chevrolet Volt. GM Volt refers to both an electric car, and a wide range of electric vehicles (Erve). The strategy worked. People are queuing up to buy the car again later GM electric drive. Volt is technically a hybrid standard.
The new GM EV has the largest hybrid battery pack is it in 16kWh. This pack Li-Ion battery so great as in all-electric cars like the Mitsubishi iMiEV.
The car also has a generator on board, and the engine 4-cylinder gas. Unlike many other hybrids (GM included), the motor volt generator, the electric motor turn in. So, after mile 40 or that the range is extruded from the battery, the 4 banger Kicks offers and your inventory. The battery is only by plugging in. This also gives the label “PHEVs, or plug in the charging of electric vehicle Volt.
GM has a winning history of the production of electric cars. Let us hope the company stays on course and avoid more arounds tower in the middle of the road power.
